You are to answer all five questions for The Hobbit. This may seem like a lot of work, but if you take it in stages, you should be able to complete it without the task being too taxing.

Summer Reading Assignment for

The Hobbit

  1. Select 5 literary devices that you discover as you read. Write out the literary device, the sentence that contains the literary device, and a brief explanation (3 -4 sentences) as to the effect each literary device creates. Suggested devices: metaphor, foreshadowing, allusion, imagery, onomatopoeia, and symbolism.

  2. 2. Select 5 quotes as you read that you find particularly meaningful, interesting, or important to the plot/meaning of the novel. Write out each quote and a brief analysis of each. Why is each quote so important/interesting?

  3. 3. Describe the character/person that changed the most from the beginning of the book to the end of the book. Explain the change and its cause (80-100 words).

  4. 4. Describe a minor character/person in the book that had major importance to the plot/essential meaning. Explain why (80-100 words).

  5. 5. List one possible theme of the novel, and a brief explanation of how it applies (3-4 sentences). Remember that theme is a truth about life experience, or an insight about human nature. (Do a little research on google for common themes, and see which of them sounds like a possibility for this book.)
